Annual Salary Range: $35,000.00 - $40,000.00

The Greening of Detroit is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working with residents, block clubs, community development corporations, schools, faith-based organizations and businesses to grow A Greener Detroit through planting and educational programs, workforce development, environmental leadership, advocacy and by building community capacity. Since 1989, we have worked to reforest the City of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park by planting over 150,000 trees while working closely with the City of Detroit and in 2024 we celebrate our thirty-fifth year of community service.

Position Description:

The Greening of Detroit’s Community Outreach Coordinator supports the engagement of Detroit residents and community groups in the process and decision-making of community tree planting(s) within their immediate neighborhood. Each community planting event requires hours of conversations with 10 -100 residents over weeks and months to culminate into each one-day planting event. The Greening of Detroit relies on hundreds of volunteers and corporate partners who support our mission. This position functions within the Green Infrastructure department to engage and inspire our community and corporate partners and volunteers through hands on engagement. The successful candidate has proven experience working with diverse backgrounds and skill levels. The Community Outreach Coordinator helps The Greening of Detroit’s Community Forestry Initiative create and lead a fresh and positive perspective that enriches the culture of environmentalism and sustainability. This position reports to the Volunteer and Community Outreach Manager with management administration from the Director of Green Infrastructure.

Essential Position Responsibilities:

• Proactively work with the Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager and Green Infrastructure Department to explore volunteer work opportunities and projects to match and assign community volunteers.

• Support all aspects of the Citizen Forester Program, events and personnel.

• Design, organize and manage planting events and act as the organization’s contact for information distribution to volunteer groups prior to events and respond to inquiries in a timely and knowledgeable manner.

• Supervise and instruct volunteers, corporate partners and planting-event personnel.

• Coordinate with other Greening of Detroit department(s) to ensure the presence of experienced employees to assist community and corporate volunteers.

• Without fail, ensure all necessary equipment and consumables are at each planting site event prior to the start of each event.

• Meet with volunteer and community groups throughout Detroit on a regular basis.

• Attend ALL tree plantings during both the Spring and Fall planting seasons, including weekends as scheduled. November 2024

• Design education and outreach materials to support programs and use social media and various communication channels for distribution.

• Act as Community Outreach Ambassador to increase the number of Detroit’s Citizen Forester residents.

• Present informational training during tabling events for community residents regarding the benefits of trees, tree plantings, and forestry programs.

• Maintain, for grant reporting, detailed records and expenses for volunteer and community outreach engagements.

• Attends all departmental and organizational meetings as required or requested.

• Completes other duties and projects as assigned, directed, or as requested to facilitate The Greening of Detroit’s mission and organizational presence.

Education and Experience:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Community Education & Outreach, Environmental Interpretation plus a minimum of two (2) years work experience are preferred. Non-degreed candidates with four (4) plus years of experience and related coursework are welcome to apply.

• Previous experience and a working knowledge on the scientific and cultural benefits of trees, native plants and stormwater management.

• Possess a working knowledge of all components of Microsoft Office Suite.

Compensation, Benefits and Perks:

The Greening of Detroit offers health (medical, dental and vision) insurance coverage with employee premium sharing. The Greening of Detroit provides paid holidays, paid sick days and paid bereavement days. Additional perks are personal paid days off and paid time off during the end-of-the-year holiday shutdown, dates to be determined in relation to January 1st of the following year.
