Detroit was once honored as one of the first “City of Trees” recognized nationally for its tree-lined boulevards, lush parks, and wooded neighborhoods. Over the years, disease, storm damage and neglect took their toll, and half a million trees were lost.

At the same time population decreased, housing stock declined and vacant space within the city increased dramatically. Our children were left inside and a whole generation never learned to love the environment that surrounded them.
But, thanks to the hard work and donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies, The Greening of Detroit has been working tirelessly to bring Detroit back to its former glory by planting trees and gardens and providing the community with guidance, inspiration, and the skills necessary to reforest our neighborhoods, turn vacant lots into productive green space, and teach our children to respect nature.
Memorial Tree Program
You can help us in this important work by joining as a member or by making a memorial donation while also honoring those who have touched your life. The Greening of Detroit’s Membership Program offers you a simple way to participate and its Memorial Tree Program provides a unique way to pay homage to a special person by providing a gift that will bring life and beauty to Detroit’s neighborhoods.
Each year, The Greening of Detroit selects a memorial grove site, which may be located in a park, schoolyard, boulevard or major thoroughfare. Honorees receive an invitation to the planting event and a permanent marker bearing the honoree’s name will be installed at the planting site.
These living memorials pay tribute to loved ones, while also creating a more beautiful Detroit. As one donor told us, his gift was “a fitting tribute to my dad in a place that was important to him.”
